Australia's very own blues master Jeff Lang releases a very special album together with the late Chris Whitley who passed away in November 2005. Recorded in Australia in April 2005, Jeff describes working with Chris Whitley both a privilege and an honour. Together their intuition, sensitivity and inspiring musicianship went along way towards making this album possible.
Says Jeff:
It is bitter/sweet looking back on recording this album with Chris. He first raised the idea of doing a collaboration when we played some shows together in Oregon, Washington and Alaska in October 2004.
I had known Chris since 1993 when he first toured Australia. He has been a source of inspiration ever since - an artistic lighthouse in the world, and we would catch up every so often when our touring trajectories would collide. He set up a small tour of the East Coast of Australia to allow time to make this record in April 2005.
We were lucky to have the talents of Mick Wordley at hand to capture proceedings and the rhythm section of Grant Cummerford and Ashley Davies. Together their intuition, sensitivity and inspiring musicianship went a long way towards making this record possible.
Before Chris learned of the disease that would claim his life in November 2005 we had spoken about the record he made in America shortly after this recording (Reiter In) and his plans to continue a series of "Bastard Club" releases with a shifting lineup of musicians. When I spoke to him in late September he had the mixes I'd sent him for this album playing loudly in the background and was full of ideas about starting his own label for albums like this.
He and I had agreed on the mixes, track order and title, though he did have a soft spot for calling it "Road Dog Shall Inherit The Earth".
Working with Chris Whitley was a privilege and an honour and I hope you enjoy this document of a couple of road dogs at play. Jeff Lang - June 2006.
